Our Los Angeles home automation team has decades of experience Smart home automation is a hot topic in the world of home technology. But what is it exactly?
Your home is made up of various systems. These include lighting, heating and cooling, audio/video or home theater, perhaps a pool or spa, and a security system. Traditionally these systems have operated independently of one another. A home automation system allows you to tie all of these systems together and control them from a device such as a smartphone or tablet.
One of the biggest enhancements you can make to a home is adding automated lighting control. These types of systems offer a number of advantages over traditional lighting.
First and foremost you can set lighting levels for any number of lights in a room and then turn them all on and of with the press of a single button. Instead of multiple switches cluttering up your wall space, there is one keypad that allows you to control the entire room. Not only is this more convenient, but it enhances the look of the room as well.
Lighting levels can be adjusted independently and saved as presets in the keypad. This allows you to create scenes for a room. It also allows you to accent certain parts of the room with more light and others with less.
Centralized control means that you can also turn all the lights in the house off with the touch of a button as well. No more walking around the house turning off the lights. Simply press the ‘Good Night’ button on the keypad next to your bed and it’s all taken care of for you. And a ‘Bathroom’ button dimly lights a path to the bathroom should the need arise in the middle of the night.
A lighting control system can also save you energy. Most lights don’t need to be on 100% all of the time. In fact many can operate at much lower levels and still provide perfect lighting conditions.
Automated lighting can also be integrated with your security system. If the alarm detects an intruder inside and outside lights can turn on or blink, scaring off the would be robber.
Control the Climate
Heating and cooling your home can be expensive. A smart home allows you to control all of your thermostats from one device. It also allows you to quickly and easily schedule when the system should be on or off.
If you’re going out of town, just set the system to ‘Away’ and all of your thermostats will go into energy saving mode. Even if you forget, you can just logon to your system via your phone and make any change you like. You could even turn the air back on a day before you get back so that the house is cool by the time you arrive.
Integrating the climate control system with the rest of your smart home enables the system to minimize energy usage in parts of the house that are unoccupied or see infrequent use. They can even detect when a door is left open accidentally and turn the system off until it is closed.
Audio and Video
Integrating your audio video system or home theater with your automation system is a no-brainer. Home electronics can be frustrating to control. But not with a touch panel or remote that takes care of everything for you. With a single press of a button you can turn on your favorite TV show, movie, or start your favorite album. Want to hear your music in every room of the house. It’s just the press of a button away.
Pool and Spa Control
Controlling the temperature of your pool or hot tub is as simple as picking up your phone. Want the hot tub to be ready to go by the time you get home? Turn it up before you leave work. You’ll be relaxing in no time.
